24 Hours in Stockholm
Our Europe trip started with a 24 hour layover in Stockholm. After our amazing, and we mean amazing SAS flight to into Sweden, we took the bullet train into the city early this morning. Once we settled into our hotel, the HTL, we went out looking for some breakfast and much needed caffeine (anyone who knows Chris, knows that this is needed for survival). Conveniently down the block from us was the famous breakfast spot, Vete-Katten, and we popped in. It was a very good choice!
After we were fully full, we made out way towards the water and crossed into Gamla Stan, the Old Town. It is a quaint and beautiful little town that is mostly overrun by tourists, definitely the inspiration for Bush Gardens and Disney World, but a must see in the City. We weaved through the streets filled with little shops and cafes eventually finding ourselves by The Royal Palace. Completed in 1760, the Palace sits alongside the Stromkajen river and we were able to see the Royal Chapel, the courtyard and the changing of the guards.
Our next stop was to the Vasamuseet to see the restored Vasa ship. The Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in 1678 and remained under water until it was excavated in 1961. Due to the mud and cold water, the ship and many of its contents were kept in pristine condition. It was quite a site!
Running on fumes we decided to head back to our hotel for a European nap (Chris couldn't wait).
On our way we ran into a huge parade for Stockholm's Pride Week. Tons of people turned out to participate and watch the colorful parade throughout the city.
3 hours later we are a little more rested and hungry so we walk over to Speceriet a great little restaurant about a 20 minute walk from our hotel. Best meal I think we have had in a long time. We started with the fried broccoli and Charcuterie, which was finger licking good. For our entrees we had Swedish chantarelles with potato and cheese purée and egg yolk and a Tarte-Flambée with garlic, cabbage and ”Isterband” sausage. Delish. We rounded the dinner out the way every meal should be finished, with dessert, Summer cake with fresh berries and vanilla cream and a Poached peach with lemon verbena, almonds and yoghurt ice cream.
After dinner we took a last long walk along the water back to our hotel. Even though it was short, we got a lot out of our day in Stockholm. I am sure we'll be back to visit soon!
